The second derby game between these two sides finished in a 1-1 draw tonight at the RSC.
This game however seemed the exact opposite of the first game at Turner’s Cross. Waterford were the better side and deserved their win back in March, but Tommy Dunne’s men will find themselves unlucky not to have left Suirside with all three points.
A lively contest, saw George O’Callaghan the first to have a pop at goal. His free-kick fooled everyone and hit the side netting, with everyone expected a cross. Cathal Lordan had the best chance of the half. Shane Duggan put a low cross into the box and Lordan volleyed towards goal but Chris Konopka saved excellently.
Davin O’Neill came close to spectacular goal moments later, Konopka’s clearance only went as far as the Cobh man, and he struck with Konopka well off his line but it went just over the bar. The opener came just after the half hour mark. O’Callaghan’s cross was met by Seamus Long, and Uros Hojan accidentally headed the attempted clearance into his own net.
The lead was short-lived. Former blues striker Graham added another goal to his tally with a stunning header, getting on the end of Cathal Lordan beautifully floated free-kick.
It was all Cork City after the break, with the home side rarely showing any attacking threat. City did have the ball in the net but it was ruled out for offside. Davin O’Neill’s overhead kick was tipped onto the bar by Konopka, and Duggan fired home the rebound but it didn’t count. Both Duggan and O’Neill had efforts wide of the post. Paul Deasy has been showing glmpses of brilliance after coming off the bench in recent weeks, and could have taken all three points fir the Leesiders in injury time, but his free kick agonisingly struck the crossbar.
