Wexford Youths 0-2 Cork City

Cork City continued their excellent away record this season with a 2-0 victory over Wexford Youths at Ferrycarrig Park.

Striker Graham Cummins netted twice to bring his tally thus far to seven goals, as City now lie level on points with third placed Monaghan United.

Two goals in the first half were enough to seal the three points, but Wexford Youths will feel somewhat unlucky to not have levelled the scoreline midway through the first half. Gary Sheahan ballooned his penalty kick well over the bar, after Stephen Mulcahy had committed a foul in the box.

City took the lead after the seventh minute, Cummins firing a volley past Patrick Holden from Dave Rogers cross. The two players combined again minutes later, but Cummins couldn’t connect at the back post and the ball went agonisingly wide. The away side controlled the game for 20 minutes until the penalty decision. Some nervous play from the Leesiders gave Wexford an impetuous to attack, but it was City who still had the better chances.

Cummins was a constant threat, and headed just wide from Davin O’Neill’s cross, while Dave Warren should have done better with his strike after being played in by Cathal Lordan.

The second goal of the game arrived just before the break. O’Neill found space to shoot but the ball rebounded back off the crossbar, but Graham Cummins was in the right place at the right time to nod the ball into an empty net.

The City number 9 went in search of his first hat-trick for the club and could have scored again just after the restart but he couldn’t get his header on target. After a scramble in the box, bother Cummins and O’Neill came close, but a third goal was proving beyond their reach. Shane Duggan’s effort was saved by Holden in the dying stages of the game, as City ran out deserved winners.
